Common Eye Conditions and Their Symptoms

The most common eye conditions are glaucoma, colorblindness, issues with contact lenses, dry eye, eyestrain, cross eyes and nystagmus, color blindness, macular degeneration, cataracts, refractive errors, and more. Below is some more information about a few of these common eye conditions.

Macular degeneration, also called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is where your retina is damaged, due to aging. Symptoms include see white or dark, blurry areas in the middle of your vision. This condition can be treated with laser therapy, vision aids, vitamins, and medications. Cataracts are when your eye's internal lens starts to cloud over. There aren't any symptoms.

Dry eye is when your eyes don't produce enough tears to keep your eyes moist. It may feel as if your eye is burning or that something is in your eye. Our optometrist can prescribe drops for a severe dry eye. You can also use a humidifier, special eye cream, eye drops that act like tears to keep your eyes moist, and nutritional supplements with omega-3 and fish oil.

Refractive errors include presbyopia, astigmatism, and myopia. Myopia is also called nearsightedness. Symptoms include having a hard time seeing far away. Presbyopia is where the patient has a hard time seeing close up, also referred to as farsightedness.

Treatment for Common Eye Conditions

Eye exams and diagnostic tests can be given by our optometrist to diagnose and direct treatment. Comprehensive eye and vision exams should be taken every year to make sure your eyes are healthy and to catch and treat common eye conditions before they get serious. Once a diagnosis is made, we can treat or refer your condition. Treatment may include medications, eye drops, or surgery.

Once diagnostic tests have been given and a diagnosis made, our optometrist can recommend ocular surgery. We provide referrals for eye surgery and work with your ophthalmologist to co-manage pre- and post-operative care. These include co-management of LASIK and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) surgeries. Our optometrist will want to go over your health history before recommending surgery.
